The meaning of Quaqtaq in English is not very inviting, but reminds of an Inuit legend. According to the legend, a beluga hunter found living parasites in his feces, and the inhabitants then changed the name of their village, which was once called long point.
Logically speaking, the first name was ideal, since the village is located on a peninsula stretching in the Hudson Bay and surrounded with mountains and rocky hills. The Quaqtaq inhabitants enjoy the banks of the Diana Bay to catch fish and seafood like mussels and soft shell clams. Nearby, the Akpatok Island is the ideal place for hunting, but also for wildlife observation. Like in many Nordic villages in Quebec, this one conceals many archaeological sites.
