There are nearly ten Cree villages in Quebec, nine to be exact. The northernmost one, Whapmagoostui, is in the Nunavik region. Unlike its brother villages, this community is only accessible by plane. It shares its land with the Inuit in Kuujjuarapik. In English, Whapmagoostui means “place of the beluga”, a key sign as to the number of beluga whales that once lived, and still live, in this area. It is almost guaranteed to see one if you go on an excursion at sea. You will see belugas as well as bearded and ringed seals… oh, and icebergs, of course.
