This 571 km2 territory was inaugurated in 1986. It was created to move the inhabitants of Kuujjuarapik in the case the hydroelectric project Grande Baleine would be realized. The village of Umiujaq was established at the foot of a hill that looks like a traditional Inuit boat made with sealskin. The archaeological digs conducted in the area before the establishment of the village led to the discovery of numerous artefacts and traditional house articles. Nowadays, these objects are shown in the town council building.
