The Hudson Bay, one of the largest bays in the world, is in fact a large 822,324 km2 inner sea. Its waters flow into the Arctic Ocean. This bay was formed 10,000 years ago during the last glaciations. The east coast of the bay is shaped like a semi-circle, which some believe has been created by a meteorite. To this day, however, nobody has proved this fact. Three Nordic villages and one Cree village (Kuujjuarapik, Umiujaq, Inukjuak and Whapmagoostui) are established along this half-circle. The rivers nearby once made this territory favourable to fur trading, and nowadays, it is still profitable to seal and walrus hunting. The Manitounuk Islands are also an ideal place where to observe the fauna and flora of the great northern Quebec. Despite the fact that outdoor activities are more popular in this area, let’s not forget the cultural and handicraft aspect of the Inuit community. Besides, you can admire Eddy Weetaluktuk’s works of art in the region.
