Only 15 kilometres southeast of the village of Kangiqsujuaq, the Qikertaaluk & Qajartalik Island once attracted archaeologists. Archaeological digs made on these two islands during the 1950s have brought to light many petroglyphs as old as 1,200 years. In addition, the remnants of semi-underground dwellings built 800 years ago by the Inuit were revealed. The discovery of a miniature ivory mask would prove that the Qajartalik island was inhabited or visited more than 2,400 years ago, which means 400 years B.C. Other objects have let scientists with the idea that the area was inhabited by the Dorset, the Inuit's ancestors, from 800 B.C. to 1000 A.D.
