
The meaning of the name of this town is truly not very inviting. There are two ancient explanations to this story. Of course, in both cases, we are talking about decomposed carcases left in the area. First, people say that caribous drowned while crossing the river, but on the other hand, people say that an entire population was killed by an epidemic, leaving no one to bury the corpses…
Nowadays, Puvirnituq is, along with Kuujjuaq, one of Nunavik's administrative centres with 1,170 inhabitants living on a 627-km2 territory. There are numerous lakes and rivers as well as abundant wildlife, thus allowing hunting and fishing. Thousands of caribous wander around the village for days in the fall season. In this village, you can also observe the participants of the Festival des neiges.
